How to Buy the Perfect Dressage Horse: Expert Tips for a Smart Investment
Buying a Dressage Horse: What You Need to Know
Buying a dressage horse is one of the most significant decisions an equestrian can make. I've seen it go beautifully right and painfully wrong. Whether you're just starting out or you've been in the sport for years, the process deserves time, care, and the right guidance. Here's what I've learned from years of working in the dressage world.
1. Start With Your Goals and Budget
Before you even start looking, get honest with yourself about what you actually need. Are you searching for a young horse with potential, or do you need a schoolmaster who can carry you through the levels? Are you aiming for Prix St. Georges, or is Grand Prix the dream? And what can you realistically spend not just on the purchase, but on training, care, and competition?
Knowing the answers to these questions will save you a lot of time and heartache.
2. Bloodlines and Pedigree Matter
Breeding isn't everything, but it tells a story. In dressage, certain bloodlines consistently produce horses with the movement, rideability, and mental strength needed to perform at the top. Names like Totilas, Sandro Hit, Donnerhall, and Jazz appear in the pedigrees of many successful horses for good reason. Do your homework on the sire and dam lines it gives you a realistic picture of what the horse may develop into.
3. Look Beyond the First Impression
A horse can look stunning in a video or in the stable, but what matters is how it moves and how it feels under saddle. Look for three quality gaits: an active, clear walk; an elastic, expressive trot; and a powerful, uphill canter. Natural suspension and a strong topline are signs of a horse built for dressage. If you're not sure what to look for, bring someone who does.

4. Never Skip the Vet Check
This one is non-negotiable. A thorough pre-purchase examination including flexion tests and X-rays of the joints and hooves is essential before any purchase. No horse is completely without history, but you deserve to know exactly what you're buying. A good vet will give you an honest picture, and that information is worth every euro.
5. Temperament Is Everything
Talent without rideability is a difficult combination. A horse that's tense, spooky, or resistant will test even the most experienced rider. Ask yourself: does this horse want to work with you? Is it curious, willing, and manageable on the ground? Does its energy level suit your riding style? The best partnerships are built on trust and that starts from day one.
6. Ride It More Than Once
One test ride is never enough. Visit the horse on different days, in different conditions. See how it behaves when it's fresh, when it's tired, when there's something going on outside the arena. A horse that's consistent across different situations is a horse you can build on.
7. Get the Right People Around You
If you're new to buying dressage horses, don't go it alone. A trainer or advisor you trust can spot things you might miss, help you stay objective when emotions run high, and support you through the negotiation and vet check process. The right guidance at this stage can make all the difference.

8. Demand Transparency on Price
Unfortunately, the dressage market isn't always straightforward. Hidden commissions and inflated prices do exist. Always ask for a clear, upfront asking price. If something feels off, trust that instinct. A seller who is confident in their horse and their pricing will have nothing to hide.
9. Take Your Time
The right horse is out there. Don't let impatience or pressure push you into a decision you're not sure about. I've seen buyers fall in love with the wrong horse and regret it within months. Take the time to find the one that truly fits your level, your goals, your personality. It's worth the wait.
